Democrat Ron Barber Bills Taxpayers for Reelection Campaign

Claims Opposition to “Waste, Fraud and Abuse” — But He’s the Worst Offender

PHOENIX – Robert Graham, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, brought to light more of Democrat Congressman Ron Barber’s hypocrisy today — this time for using taxpayer dollars to send campaign materials to voters. Graham previously called attention to Barber’s support of the wildly unpopular Obamacare program, and recently exposed Barber’s disingenuous statement that he was unsure of his plans for reelection.

“This is more evidence that Barber continues to blindly follow the Democrat Party playbook of fiscal irresponsibility by playing fast and loose with taxpayer dollars,” said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Graham. “Ron Barber is a hypocrite — if he really wanted to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse he should start with his own office.”

Graham noted that Barber was abusing a congressional perk known as “franking” in which members of Congress can distribute “Official Business” documents to constituents through the U.S. Postal Service. There is no cost to the member of Congress but the practice amounts to a significant subsidy paid for by taxpayers.

Barber’s staff, apparently desperate to keep their boss in office, decided not to send “Official Business” documents but instead created a slick campaign brochure full of photographs of Barber. Barber then stuck taxpayers with the cost of distributing it to voters in an attempt to curry favor with voters in advance of the election. There are more than 380,000 registered voters in the southern Arizona district, and the cost to send his brochure likely cost several hundred thousand dollars in postage alone.

“These are southern Arizona voters with a lot of common sense, and they’re fed up with Ron Barber’s nonsense,” Graham added.
