Lobbyist Fred DuVal: 21 Days & Counting Since Promise Was Made to Release Client List

Lobbyist Fred DuVal: 21 Days & Counting Since Promise Was Made to Release Client List

AZGOP Announces “DuVal’s Disclosure Promise Clock”

PHOENIX – More than 21 days ago Democrat Fred DuVal, a special interest lobbyist and career influence peddler, promised to release his lobbying client list during the Clean Elections debate on September 28.  Today, Arizonans are still waiting for DuVal to keep the public promise he made to them.  To help voters keep track of how long it takes for DuVal to come clean and keep his promise, the Arizona Republican Party today released “DuVal’s Disclosure Promise Clock” to highlight how long it’s been since he made that promise and remind him that the clock is ticking.

“It’s been 21 days and counting since lobbyist Fred DuVal promised Arizonans that he would release his client list.  There’s only 14 days until the election itself.  When, exactly, will Fred DuVal come clean with Arizona’s voters who deserve to know the truth about whom he has represented as a lobbyist?” asked Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Graham.  “The DuVal Disclosure Promise Clock was designed to help Arizonans realize how long it takes Fred DuVal to keep his promises, especially as they’re researching who to vote for or prepare to go to the polls on Election Day.  Do Arizona voters want a governor who refuses to keep his promises and hides from them?  Apparently, that’s what Fred DuVal is offering.”

DuVal Said “Sure” When Asked If He Would Disclose Client List:

Doug: “Fred, would you disclose your list of clients?”

Fred: “Sure.”

Doug: “As a lobbyist?”

Fred: “Sure.”

Concerning Things Have Come Into The Light In The 21 Days Since This Promise Was Made:

1) DuVal Was The Guest Of Honor At A Farewell Party Thrown By Notorious Lobbyist Edward Von Kloberg III. “DuVal apparently felt no shame in being the guest of honor at a von Kloberg party, or in accepting praise from von Kloberg, when DuVal left the nation’s capital for Arizona after serving in Bill Clinton’s White House and State Department.” (Patrick Howley, “Saddam’s Consultant Threw Party For Arizona Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Fred DuVal,” The Daily Caller, 10/7/14)

Kloberg Prided Himself On Representing The Most Vile Clients Possible. “In his years representing the world’s most bloodstained, thieving dictators – Saddam Hussein and Mobutu Sese Seko among them – von Kloberg made millions.” (Richard Leiby, “Fall of the House Of Von Kloberg,” The Washington Post, 7/31/05)

2) Upon Leaving The Clinton Administration, DuVal Became Senior Managing Director Of Lobbying Firm Hill & Knowlton. “DuVal joined Hill and Knowlton in 1999 after leaving his position as deputy director of intergovernmental affairs for the Clinton White House.  He became the senior managing director of the firm, and remained there until 2002 when he started his own firm.” (Brent Scher, “Fred DuVal’s Lobbying Career Ties Him To Anti-Israel Group, African Diamond Industry,” The Washington Free Beacon, 10/8/14)

During DuVal’s Tenure, Hill & Knowlton Represented The Botswanan Government, Which Forcibly Relocated Indigenous People To Create A Diamond Industry. “The government removed 1,645 Bushmen, or San, from land that they roamed for a period that is believed to go back 20,000 years … It is widely believed that the San were removed from their land by Botswana to ‘clear the way for diamond-prospecting companies.’” (Brent Scher, “Fred DuVal’s Lobbying Career Ties Him To Anti-Israel Group, African Diamond Industry,” The Washington Free Beacon, 10/8/14)

Hill & Knowlton Also Represented The Main Diamond Mining Company. “Hill and Knowlton had the Debswana Diamond Company, the Botswana subsidiary of the massive De Beers diamond company, as a client at the same time as Botswana.” (Brent Scher, “Fred DuVal’s Lobbying Career Ties Him To Anti-Israel Group, African Diamond Industry,” The Washington Free Beacon, 10/8/14)

Also During DuVal’s Tenure, Hill & Knowlton Represented The Anti-Israel Group, The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. “Another one of Hill and Knowlton’s clients during DuVal’s time there was the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, which argued at the time that Israel illegally occupied Palestinian lands and this was ‘the foremost obstacle to peace … The ADC added that the United States ‘funds the occupation’ and is not an ‘honest broker’ in the peace process.” (Brent Scher, “Fred DuVal’s Lobbying Career Ties Him To Anti-Israel Group, African Diamond Industry,” The Washington Free Beacon, 10/8/14)

Hill & Knowlton Represented The ALFA Group, A Russian Oil Conglomerate With Ties To The Hussein Regime. “Alfa was also at the center of the controversial ‘oil for food’ United Nations program that provided 20 million barrels of oil to Saddam Hussein each year.  Russia told the United States that the only way it would support toppling the Hussein regime was if the Alfa contract would still be honored after the regime fell.” (Brent Scher, “Fred DuVal’s Lobbying Career Ties Him To Anti-Israel Group, African Diamond Industry,” The Washington Free Beacon, 10/8/14)

3) DuVal “Helped Arrange For A Swiss Banking Firm To Get [New Mexico] Bond Work – A Deal That Was Part Of A Federal Grand Jury Investigation Looking At Alleged Pay-To-Play Schemes.” “And now Richardson’s name has been injected into the gubernatorial race in Arizona in an effort to tar the Democratic candidate there.  That candidate, Fred DuVal, was a director of a Richardson PAC in 2004.  At the time, he also helped arrange for a Swiss banking firm to get state bond work – a deal that was part of a federal grand jury investigation looking at alleged pay-to-play schemes during Richardson’s tenure as governor … Richardson’s connection to DuVal never has been a secret.  In 2004, DuVal was on the board of directors for Sí, Se Puede Boston 2004 Inc.  This political action committee raised money for Richardson’s activities in Boston during the 2004 Democratic Convention.  Richardson was chairman of the national convention that year … At the same time DuVal was with Sí, Se Puede, his company was working for UBS – which also contributed to Richardson’s convention PAC.  Despite the fact that UBS in a statement credited DuVal’s company for getting its deal with New Mexico, DuVal told Bloomberg in 2009 that he wasn’t involved, insisting the company’s bankers already had ties with the Richardson administration … DuVal’s company worked in 10 states trying to get bond deals for USB, according to a 2009 article in The Bond Buyer.” (Steve Terrell, “Richardson Pay-To-Play Scandal Haunts Dem Seeking Arizona’s Top State Job,” The New Mexican, 10/1/14)

DuVal Continues To Deny Involvement With The UBS Bond Deal Even Though He Is Credited. “Despite the fact that UBS in a statement credited DuVal’s company for getting its deal with New Mexico, DuVal told Bloomberg in 2009 that he wasn’t involved, insisting the company’s bankers already had ties with the Richardson administration … DuVal’s company worked in 10 states trying to get bond deals for USB, according to a 2009 article in The Bond Buyer.” (Steve Terrell, “Richardson Pay-To-Play Scandal Haunts Dem Seeking Arizona’s Top State Job,” The New Mexican, 10/1/14)
